Reviews for Dear Bobby
This is a stunning work of art and a labor of love. So real, raw and hauntingly beautiful.
– Sarah Kacala, Little Girl Speak
When your child or someone you love is addicted, and especially when that addiction is coupled with any form of mental illness, you live a roller coaster of emotions of epic proportions…When this nightmare goes on for years with no end in sight, it only becomes more complicated…
You won’t find answers here. There are no answers…No matter how lofty our dreams for our addicted loved one, and regardless of their brilliant potential, we have to join the author in that land that exists somewhere between pride and awe and disappointment and despair.
And this is where Dear Bobby stands out. Because Bobby clearly had brilliance and charm. He had motivation and he knew how to motivate others… Bobby so obviously wanted to beat his addiction and gain control of his thoughts.
And he failed. At least in this first life on earth. His parent’s faith was his own, albeit at times confused and frustrated by the head games that only drugs and mental illness can play. By sharing Bobby’s journal entries and poetry, we see into his thought processes and also into the conflict he fought within.
What really makes this book shine for me is the way Bobby is presented, and how the author has dealt with his reality, and her reality, both during his addiction and up to the present time… And in the end, it is hopeful. There really is life after death…
Reading the author’s comments and letters as she worked through these emotions is something that would benefit anyone going through this process. And it is a process. It’s a process repeatedly disrupted by hope and despair until there is no hope. Jackie Young shows that even when hope is lost it’s still there.
